Oh the Horror!

Posted by steveonsinema on January 29, 2009

Good evening and welcome to my blog, and my views on cinema.  Today was a great day as it was my payday at work.  I had set aside $60.00 from this particular paycheck to be able to purchase two Weekend Pass tickets for Warren and I for the upcoming Horror Hound Weekend in Indianapolis, IN.  At the end of March, the 27th thru 29th, we will be enjoying our weekend at the Marriott in Indianapolis and the horror convention.

While there, we will be meeting the stars of many horror films, past and present.  I will be getting a few autographs and taking some pictures, as well as purchasing some items including DVDs and t-shirts.  We will have a great time, away from home and work, and spending quality time with one another and enjoying each others company.  I have been very excited to take this trip, as my birthday happens to fall on Saturday the 28th, and this is my birthday present to myself.  Maybe Warren will buy me something special that weekend – what do you say pal??? ☺  Anyway, one of my favorite actors growing up, Corey Haim, will be signing autographs at the convention and I’m planning on having a “Lost Boys” poster signed by Corey.  I’m also hoping for a picture with him.  Here are four of the movie stars that I’m hoping to pick up an autograph from.

We are less than two months away from our road trip to Indy!  This trip should be no problem for Warren and I as last year we drove to Oklahoma to attend a five concert called “Rocklahoma”.  This was about a 15-hour drive, where Indianapolis should be a few hours less.  What a great time that was in Oklahoma last year – great music, an enjoyable ride (although long), and good company with my partner Warren.  I would actually love to go again this year, but we will have to see what I can afford and where else we may decide to go.  We both love to travel, and usually take a week long trip each year.  This year we have been thinking about either Provincetown, San Francisco, or Key West/Fort Lauderdale.  They all sound good to me!  At least we would be warm wherever we choose.

Now on to my DVD pick of the week, “Lakeview Terrace”.  We have not yet seen this film, but it looks like a great thriller, and Warren and I both love these types of movies.  Samuel L. Jackson is a wonderful actor, so this movie should be very good.

Here’s a look at the plot of this movie…

LAKEVIEW TERRACE: A quick perusal of any of LAKEVIEW TERRACE’s promotional materials–its nervy trailer, its foreboding (and painterly) dawn-hued poster featuring Samuel L. Jackson looking less-than-neighborly in his squad car–not only reveals it as a thriller, but offers up aesthetic evocations of several popular home-invasion suspensers made in the early 1990s. Like UNLAWFUL ENTRY and PACIFIC HEIGHTS, LAKEVIEW TERRACE takes place in upper-middle-class Californian suburbia. The film’s ubiquitous purple sky and poolside lighting create an air of domestic bourgeois comfort just waiting to be upended by deadly social unease. In this mode, the surprises start when the film opens with intimate household scenes not of the film’s purported heroes, an interracial couple who’s about to move next-door, but of its not-entirely-apparent villain–a curiously middle-aged beat cop (Jackson) who raises a few eyebrows when he close-mindedly bullies his children, but seems sad and sympathetic. The cop, a black man named Abel Turner, watches blankly from his home when the first new neighbor he sees is an African-American wife (Kerry Washington)–and then reacts with quiet shock and disgust when he realizes that the white mover is actually her husband, Chris (Patrick Wilson). The invasion in this home-invasion thriller is, ironically, the one perceived by its psychologically damaged bad guy. Abel, offended and ostensibly law-immune, immediately begins jabbing Chris with a toxic passive-aggression that quickly becomes impossible to ignore. LAKEVIEW TERRACE adheres to a satisfying thriller construct. It’s also a little interested in exploiting the archetypes of squirm-inducing domestic threat–all the nasty scenarios viewers recognize from those earlier movies–to consider several facets of American racism: its inevitability in familial and casual issues and its existence in liberal white guilt as much as its poisonous mixture with mental illness.

It sounds like an interesting movie, right?  Well, I will probably pick up a copy of the DVD this weekend while we are in Minneapolis on Saturday, and we can watch it when we are at home on Sunday.

That’s about all from here today.  It’s getting a bit warmer, and also getting lighter earlier in the day…so we know that spring is getting closer.  I can’t wait until spring hits, and then summer – I’m so looking forward to the nice warm weather especially with this cold winter we have had here.  The snow can melt away anytime to!  As you can tell, I’m not a “winter” person.

Have a great night and drop me a line and let me know what you are up to and what movies you have been watching.  Until we meet again….enjoy!

Let’s Get Cranking

Posted by steveonsinema on January 25, 2009

Instead of a day spent cranking (to move with a winding course); going here, there and everywhere…it’s been a day of rest for me.  I’ve just been chilling in front of the TV first watching a movie, “Howling IV” to start my morning, then an episode of “Lost” after that, and finally onto Boston Celtics basketball.  Happy Sunday to you!  I hope whatever you are doing – whether it is a day filled with running errands, cleaning around the house, shopping or just hanging out and relaxing like me – it’s going well for you.

It’s cold outside here in northern Minnesota, so it doesn’t interest me to go outside at all today, except of course to get the Sunday paper to check out the Best Buy ad for the week.  So, I have decided to stay in with my pajamas on and watch television most of the day.  Yes, of course I took a shower and am now washing some clothes, but other than that it’s going to be a peaceful and restful day for me.

If you are interested in staying in today, but would still like an adrenaline rush, I’ve got the movie for you.  “Crank” starring Jason Statham is a fast-paced, adrenaline filled, action packed movie that will keep you going for a couple of hours.

crank-poster-big1

Here’s the storyline…

CRANK: Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) is about to begin his morning with an unexpected wake-up call. Groggy, practically unable to move and with a heart that’s barely beating, Chev answers his cell phone and hears the voice of thug Ricky Verona, who reveals Chev has been poisoned in his sleep and has only an hour to live.  As it turns out, Chev is a hit man who freelances for a major West Coast crime syndicate. And a run of the mill job the night before that was supposed to be like any other hit went unexpectedly awry: Chev let his target go in an effort to quit the professional killing business and start a new life with his girlfriend Eve.  Now, Chev must keep moving – literally – to stay alive. The only way to prolong the poison from stopping his heart is to keep his adrenaline flowing. As the clock ticks, Chelios cuts a swath through the streets of Los Angeles, wreaking havoc on those who dare stand in his way. He must rescue Eve from danger, stay two steps ahead of his nemeses as they try to eliminate him, and search for an antidote to save his own life.

This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat and will get your blood pumping.  So, you will not need to even leave your sofa, or bed or wherever you are parking yourself today, and you will still feel like you have been moving today.  Me, well, I may have to bring out my “Crank” DVD and Warren and I will have to strap ourselves in (not literally) ☺ and sit back and take in the action.  Warren has not yet seen this movie, as I checked it out in the theater a couple of years ago while we were in White Bear Lake as Warren had a prior commitment.  If not today, we will need to sit down and watch this movie again in anticipation of the recently announced “Crank II”.

crank-poster-small
I’m looking forward to the release of the second movie in the series, and it looks as though it will be coming out the beginning of April. I have watched the movie trailer a couple of times now, and you can check it out here – Crank II trailer.

Here’s a quick look at the new movie…

CRANK II: HIGH VOLTAGE: Set three months after his destructive run through Los Angeles, hitman Chev Chelios (Statham) launches himself on a literally electrifying chase through Los Angeles in pursuit of the Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered heart that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep working.

Another good thing about these two movies is that you get to check out the films star, Jason Statham, throughout.  In “Crank” you even get to check out his backside – nice!  Maybe in the second movie they will give us a full frontal shot – we can only hope!!

Well, that’s all the work for me today…one blog post and now back to the bedroom for more relaxing of the mind and body.  Again, I hope you all enjoy your day no matter what you are doing.  Drop me a comment and let me know that you are alive and kicking.  I don’t hear from too many people to this point, since my blog is fairly new, so let me know you are out there and checking in now and again.

I will see you all in a few days.  Take care.

See-Saw

Posted by steveonsinema on January 22, 2009

Good evening and Happy Thursday!  I am sure ready for the end of the work week to be here.  It’s been a busy week, as things are picking up in our office, and with the traveling that Warren and I did on Monday and Tuesday I just felt really tired today.  As you know from reading my partners writings from Wednesday and today, we went to a great concert on Monday night in Minneapolis at the Northrup Auditorium in the middle of the University of Minnesota campus.  We saw one of my current favorite bands, The Killers, and they were rocking, literally!  The third row balcony seats were great, dead center of the stage with a perfect view and the balcony bounced along with the crowd.  “The Killers” played for about 1 ½ hours, and all their great songs were included in the set list.  I loved the concert, as did Warren, and I even bought a concert tee to where around this summer.  It was a great night and a fun trip!!

This coming weekend we don’t have any major plans; we will for sure catch a movie, which one I don’t know at this point.  Other than that, nothing else on the agenda, probably just hand around the house and stay warm as it sounds like its about to get cold again….yuck!  The only good thing about that is that I will get to catch up on some television including another DVD or two out of my collection.  Speaking of my DVD collection, here are my two ‘HOT DVD Releases of the Week’ which I will be adding to my collection in a couple of days.

sawvteaser-62708

Saw V: Unrated Director’s Cut: With Jigsaw dead and the case seemingly closed, FBI Agent Strahm is still trying to link police detective Mark Hoffman to the murderer as an accomplice. Before he can, however, he gets locked in a watery cube that almost kills him. After surviving, he is suspended from the force by newcomer Dan Erickson. Seems the higher up is convinced that something is wrong with Strahm. In the meantime, Hoffman is fulfilling Jigsaw’s last wish, and setting up a game involving five individuals – a trust fund tweaker, a strident real estate broker, an egotistical investigative journalist, a corrupt city official, and a fire inspector. Their connections seems tenuous at best, but as Strahm pushes ever closer to finding out about Hoffman and his connection to the crimes, we soon learn the method to this killer’s madness.

2569849Repo! The Genetic Opera: Begun in 2002 as a Los Angeles stage production by writers Darren Smith and Terrence Zdunich, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA was designed as a gory, comedic Grand Guignol to appeal more to club goers than fans of musical theater. One fan, aspiring director Darren Lynn Bousman, who has since worked on the SAW franchise, vowed to one day direct a film version of the show. Six years (and five SAW films) later, he has made good on his promise with a bizarre, gory, and unique piece of work that is as sure to entertain as it is to polarize its audience. In the year 2056, following an epidemic of human organ failure, the GeneCo Corporation–owned by the mafia-like Largo family–grows and installs new organs on a massive scale. The business, though, necessitates the employment of repo men to reclaim the organs from clients who miss their payments. Repo man and single father Nathan Wallace (Anthony Head, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) keeps his job a secret from his terminally ill daughter, Shilo (Alexa Vega), doing it only to pay for her costly medication. Nathan also has a secret history with GeneCo patriarch Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino)—and their connection is about to become public knowledge on the night of a concert from popular singer–and GeneCo client–Blind Mag (Sarah Brightman). Compellingly strange, REPO! resembles a comic book-influenced goth dinner theater production set within a dystopian video game. Musically, the score concentrates more on libretto-like sung dialogue than memorable tunes (save Vega’s pop-punk “Sixteen” and Brightman’s chilling “Chromaggia”), but the cast appears to be having a blast. Skinny Puppy’s Nivek Ogre lends some underground cred as the most twisted member of the Largo clan, but Brightman gives the comically bloody proceedings true legitimacy. A surprising casting choice, she’s an almost regal presence, and her goosebump-inducing soprano soars stratospherically above this fun cult film in-the-making.

So, there you go, a couple of “spine-tinglers” for your long cold weekend.  I caught “Saw V” in the theater around Halloween, and it was very good…and of course, very gory.  Warren as you know, as I have stated many times, is not a horror fan so didn’t watch the movie with me, but it’s well worth a viewing for all you avid horror fans.  I happen to really enjoy this series and own all of the DVDs: Saw 1-4.

Thanks for checking in today.  Sorry the post was short and sweet today, but I’m ready to lay down and relax.  Drop me a line and let me know what you think of my selections.  If you have seen any movies recently, whether on DVD or in the theater, let me know what you saw and what you thought.  It’s good to hear from my readers, and I know Warren loves to hear from you to.

I’m off to catch the Boston Celtics vs. Orlando Magic game…Go Celtics!!!  I hope to check back in another day or two.  Keep a look out for another post over the weekend.  Until then, take it easy and enjoy your Friday.

Take care,

Steve

Bleeding Hearts

Posted by steveonsinema on January 15, 2009

Hey everyone, how are things today?  Good here, except for the exceptionally cold weather that we have been having over the past couple of days…wow…it’s cold and it stinks!  I guess this in one of the pleasures of living in northern Minnesota. ☺

Not much happening this week, except for working (for me) and taking care of things around home (for Warren).  My partner Warren is retired and sometimes his days are very long and boring, especially when the weather is bad and he doesn’t get a chance to get outside too much.  I feel for him, but the good thing is that he can email me throughout the day (and he does) and we can communicate electronically.

Warren keeps me informed each day as to what is happening around home and also about things that are noteworthy and of interest that he comes across on the internet.  He keeps me up-to-date on current events, notable deaths, entertainment and sports news.  We even give each other a little crap now and again via email.

0000034829_20061021020529william-peterson1

One thing that we have done over the 9+ years we have been together is to poke fun at one another at times when things happen in our daily lives that pertain to other “hot guys”.  Warren, being older, likes the young hotties; and me, being younger, likes the older guys.  I always give Warren crap about hot younger men on television, especially those like Shemar Moore of “Criminal Minds” fame, and he gives me crap about stars like William Peterson from “CSI” who I really like and is leaving the show as of tonight – a sad day for sure for me.

Anyway, sometimes when Warren teases me, I tease him back and because he is a very sensitive person, he gets sad or upset with me…even when I’m joking.  Warren also gets jealous at times, especially if I tell him that I think a guy I see in person or on TV is hot.  So through our daily emails, Warren will tell me that he felt sad about something we joked about – in regards to hot men – and I have to reiteriate to him that it’s all in fun and that I love him and him alone.  This happened today, with a local mechanic that Warren thinks that I like – which I don’t.

Warren – I LOVE YOU pal, you and you alone.  Keep smiling and know that it’s you and me kid, all the way to the end!

Well, it’s time to tell you all about my “HOT DVD Release of the Week” which is a truly a great one this week.  My pick is a new re-release special edition DVD of one of the all-time classic horror films, “My Bloody Valentine”.  Here’s the story… and info on the DVD.

mbvmy-bloody-valentine-1981-horror-movie-review-23653

MY BLOODY VALENTINE: Is it possible that after nearly three decades, the “missing” footage from 1981’s My Bloody Valentine has finally been inserted back into the film? Has this classic from Slasherdom’s Golden Era finally been restored to its original form, stitched back together after being hacked to pieces by the MPAA machete? Yes, fellow fanatics, it is true, and I’m in horror heaven! Please don’t wake me from this bloody wet dream come true…

My Bloody Valentine arrived at the height of the slasher craze. After Black Christmas, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (both in 1974) and Halloween (‘78) laid the groundwork (Bay of Blood also deserves mention)–and set a standard no slasher film has really matched since–genre films exploded in 1980 and ‘81. My Bloody Valentine holds a place alongside The Fog, Friday the 13th, Prom Night, Terror Train, Happy Birthday to Me and Hell Night as my “first wave” favorites, with honorable mentions to The Funhouse, The Burning and The Prowler (I consider the second installments of Friday the 13th and Halloween as leaders of the still vintage “sequel wave”).

Filmed in Nova Scotia with a Canadian cast, My Bloody Valentine has all of the genre stables that (at that time) hadn’t been overused to death quite yet.  That includes a spooky back story: 20 years ago in the blue collar town of Valentine Bluffs, two mining supervisors left their site early to go to the big Valentine’s Day dance, failing to notice the dangerous methane gas levels–thus endangering the five miners left below. An explosion soon killed all but one–Harry Warden, who spent the next year in a mental hospital.

Once released, he returned to murder the two supervisors and leave a warning to the town: never hold a Valentine’s Day dance again. Despite being supposedly locked up, Harry’s legend still haunts the small community: “Every February 14th, Harry comes back to town, his pick axe stained with blood, waiting in the shadows of the Hanniger mine just for someone to kill should they not heed his warning!” says town oracle Happy (think Ralph from Friday the 13th).

Nearly 20 years later, the town has decided to revive the celebration, but when the mayor and sheriff get a nasty box of candy, they know Harry is back on the prowl. They cancel the dance, but that doesn’t stop the town’s young adults (not teenagers, making this entry a little unique) from holding their own party at the mine. As the film progresses, Sarah (Lori Hallier) finds herself caught in an increasingly tense love triangle as current beau Axel (Neil Affleck) and ex-boyfriend/mayor’s son T.J. (Paul Kelman) vie for her affection. The tense night reaches bloody heights when a small group of party-goers–including Sarah’s best friend Patty (Cynthia Dale), Patty’s boyfriend Hollis (Keith Knight) and Howard the prankster (Alf Humphreys)–head down the mine for a joy ride.

The film has a distinctive killer (the miner’s mask and Darth Vader-like breathing are creepy); a signature weapon of destruction (the machete has nothing on the pick axe!); a genuinely unsettling location (the claustrophobic mining tunnels predate the equally effective settings in Hell Night and The Descent); a mystery that keeps you guessing long enough; some inspired set pieces, shots and kills (to this day, I am always frightened by the sound of something heavy tumbling in the dryer); and a cool original ballad over the closing credits.

Wow, I can’t wait to watch this movie again in it’s full glory – and gore.  I ordered the Special Edition DVD release this week from Amazon.com and it should be here in a few days.  This DVD release coincides with the release of “My Bloody Valentine 3D” which hits theaters tomorrow.  I will be heading to the local theater to catch this film, which I have been anticipating for a few months now.  Warren is not a horror movie fan and won’t be attending with me; he will be choosing another movie in the same theater.

my_bloody_valentine_3dposter_lg

Here’s are some notes on the new movie…

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D: Ten years ago, a tragedy changed the town of Harmony forever. Tom Hanniger, an inexperienced coal miner, caused an accident in the tunnels that trapped and killed five men and sent the only survivor, Harry Warden, into a permanent coma. But Harry Warden wanted revenge. Exactly one year later, on Valentine’s Day, he woke up…and brutally murdered twenty-two people with a pick axe before being killed.

Ten years later, Tom Hanniger returns to Harmony on Valentine’s Day, still haunted by the deaths he caused. Struggling to make amends with his past, he grapples with unresolved feelings for his ex-girlfriend, Sarah, who is now married to his best friend, Axel, the town sheriff. But tonight, after years of peace, something from Harmony’s dark past has returned. Wearing a miner’s mask and armed with a pickaxe, an unstoppable killer is on the loose. And as his footsteps come ever closer, Tom, Sarah and Axel realize in terror that it just might be Harry Warden who’s come back to claim them…

Presented in stunningly real, cutting edge 3-D projection, My Bloody Valentine 3-D stars Jensen Ackles (TV’s “Smallville” and “Supernatural”), Jaime King (The Spirit, Sin City, Sin City 2) and Kerr Smith (Final Destination, “Dawson’s Creek”). A remake of the 1981 horror classic, My Bloody Valentine 3-D is directed by Patrick Lussier and produced by Jack Murray.

All horror fans need to go check out this movie…it should be shockingly fun!  From the new movie, Chris Carnel – the miner and killer, will be a guest at the HorrorHound Weekend in March in Indianapolis which Warren and I will be attending.  Here’s hoping I can find a “My Bloody Valentine 3D” theater movie poster to have Chris sign; that would be cool!  I’m very excited about this upcoming event, and it will be a truly great weekend away, traveling with Warren and enjoying some fun times with our (or my) horror friends.

That’s all from me today.  Drop me a line if you have seen the new movie, or if you picked up the Special Edition DVD this week.  Let me know your thoughts about these movies or any others that you have seen lately.  Let me know you’re out there!

Take it easy,

Steve

Pineapples or Coconuts

Posted by steveonsinema on January 12, 2009

Hi everyone!  I know, I know…where have I been you ask?  Well, to tell you the truth, Warren and I have been really busy lately and I just haven’t had a lot of opportunity to write.  When I seem to have the time, I have been feeling too tired to write, find pictures, and post an entry.  I will get back to normal, with a few posts each week…just bear with me. :-)

This past week, as you know, Warren and I have been battling colds – with Warren’s lasting much longer than mine did.  He seems to be doing better over the past couple of days, but it still lingers…as colds do.  I still have a slight catch in my throat…dry cough at times, but all is good.  I have been busy working, and getting ready (planning) for a couple days away next Monday and Tuesday when Warren and I head to Minneapolis for “The Killers” rock concert at the Northrup Auditorium.  Although Warren is not a rocker at heart, I’m thinking he is really going to enjoy this concert.  We have 3rd row seats in the balcony, so should have a good view of the band.  I have not only purchased tickets to the concert, but also made hotel arrangement to ensure that we were all set when we get there.  I have 1 1⁄2 days off work next week, just taking some time off to get away and enjoy some quality time with my partner – it will be a great time for sure!

Anyway with all of that said, last week I never let you know about my pick for the “HOT DVD Release of the Week”, so here it is.

image005

Pineapple Express: While it might sound outlandish to speak of THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS in the same sentence as CITIZEN KANE, in its own little neck of the cinematic woods the Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen comedy is perhaps just as groundbreaking. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to think of another film that blends so seamlessly pitch-perfect stoner babble with high-octane action sequences. Dale Denton (Rogen), a process server with a weed fixation, witnesses a murder and turns to his dealer, Saul (James Franco), for support. The murderer is actually Saul’s main drug supplier, and because of Saul’s access to some extremely rare high-grade pot (called Pineapple Express) the two are quickly tracked down and put on the run. Like all Apatow/Rogen vehicles, the movie deals with the theme of men succumbing to adulthood and all the adjustments they are forced to make in the process. However, unlike KNOCKED UP and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is just too wacky to offer any lessons. Still, there’s more going on here than giggles and the munchies. Indie director David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS) brings a subtle auteur’s touch to the proceedings, approaching the smoking scenes with his distinctively loose feel and giving the action sequences a wonderfully dated sheen that makes them look more like a fight from KNIGHT RIDER than the empty flash of 21st-century blow-‘em-ups. It is Franco, however, who truly steals this movie–he hasn’t been this charming since his days on FREAKS AND GEEKS. There’s only so many ways to play a stoner, but Franco puts his own endearing, lovable spin on the type, portraying Saul as a kind-hearted, well-intentioned yet hardcore dope smoker. Rogen and Apatow have proven themselves a nearly unstoppable juggernaut; here’s hoping they bring Franco along on the ride a little more often.

image002

Warren and I went to see the film when it was in the theaters late last year, and I also picked up a copy of the DVD over the weekend – a very funny movie.  Unfortunately, a title that isn’t stocked at our local Best Buy store is my second choice for last week, “He Likes Guys”.  This looks to be an interesting collection of short stories for all my fellow gay men out there.  I’m sure Warren will be looking for a copy himself, right pal!

24627091

Here’s a quick look at the DVD….

He Likes Guys: This nice big package of gay men’s shorts showcases some of the best films of the year, fresh from the gay and lesbian film festival circuit.  This release features eight acclaimed gay-themed, male-oriented short films, including “Steam,” “Silver Road,” “Traces,” “Just,” “Laundromat,” “Seeing You in Circles,” “Waiting for Yvette,” and “Babysitting Andy.”

So, will it be “pineapples” or “coconuts” for you?  How about one of each!  Well there you go, a couple of fun DVDs to choose from and to possibly add to your collection, I know mine seems to grow more and more each week – my DVD collection that is – although over the weekend Warren and I had a couple “special times” as well! :-)

As you may all know by reading my partner Warren’s writings about our daily lives on “The View On Superior”, we have started a Weight Watchers program.  We are both looking to drop a few unwanted pounds, and because we aren’t able to exercise as much right now with the weather, we are trying to eat much more sensibly in order to get ready and be in better shape for spring.  So, we both lost a few pounds our first week, and decided to use up some of our “flex points” on the Weight Watchers program by having some popcorn and a pop at the movies on Saturday.  We went to see “Gran Torino” with Clint Eastwood, and I have to say that this was truly a great film.  The story goes…

image004

Gran Torino: Clint Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski, a widower who holds onto his prejudices despite the changes in his Michigan neighborhood and the world around him. Kowalski is a grumpy, tough-minded, unhappy an old man, who can’t get along with either his kids or his neighbors, a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1972 Gran Torino he keeps in mint condition. When his neighbor Thao, a young Hmong teenager under pressure from his gang member cousin, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Thao’s family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them from the gangs that infest their neighborhood.

The theater was packed, and for good reason; with Warren and I captivated within the story for almost two hours.  What a great film this was, and my feelings are that Clint definitely deserves an award as recognition for his great work in this film.  I loved the movie, and it’s by far the best film so far this year – although it’s still early!  By all means, go see this movie, it was wonderful.

Well, that is about all for today.  I hope to be back again in another day or two to let you know more of my thoughts on cinema, and for my DVD pick(s) of the week.  Enjoy the beginning of the week and I will talk to you again soon.

Steve
